Position Details: 


POSITION:                 Adult Basic Education (ABE) and GED Prep Instructor

                                   Classes will be held at the Michigan Works! building in Standish.


JOB GOAL:      The teacher will educate adult learners to improve their basic skills in reading, writing and math, and provide instruction to students preparing to take the GED exam.


SUPERVISOR:          Adult Education Supervisor


HOURS OF WORK:  2.5 hours per day morning or afternoon hours. Ten hours per week, Monday through Thursday.


QUALIFICATIONS:   Must hold a valid Michigan teaching license; must be Secondary Certified.  Experience teaching adult learners preferred. Experience in differentiated instruction and contextualized learning preferred.



  • Instruct adult learners using the ABE content standards developed by the State of Michigan Adult Education Taskforce.
  • Instruct adult learners working at Reading and Math grade levels below 9.0. Emphasize skill development in the context of workplace skills.
  • Instruct adult learners functioning at and above the 9.0 grade level in Reading and Math to prepare them for the GED exam.
  • Assist participants in completing their Adult Learning Plan.
  • Complete participant pre and post assessments using the CASAS test.
  • Create a learning environment conducive to student success by using a variety of instructional teaching methods to meet the needs of the students.
  • Provide support and encouragement to adult learners.
  • Abide by the information contained in the Instructional Handbook.
  • Complete and submit accurate attendance records after each class session.
  • Complete and submit grades by the required deadlines.
  • Communicate all testing, attendance, and grade information to the Adult Education office in a timely manner.
  • Attend required instructor meetings and professional development trainings.
  • Complies with State and Federal statutes and Board Policy.
  • Attendance and punctuality.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by administration


2017-18 HOURLY RATE:  $22.00 per hour
