Position Description - Coordinator

Pontiac Academy for Excellence is seeking an ESL endorsed teacher for a secondary teaching position. The candidate will teach English to students who are learning English as a Second Language. The candidate must have an NS endorsement as well as a major or minor in ELA.

 

 QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must possess a valid Michigan teaching certificate with an endorsement in English as a Second Language (NS). Preferred applicants will also have a secondary endorsement in English or Language Arts covering grades 6-12.
  • Applicants must be ‘highly qualified’ as defined under the No Child Left Behind Act.
  • Ability to teach a wide variety of students with many different languages.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, school staff and parents.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide academic instruction and support to students with low English skills.
  • Direct and supervise paraprofessionals assigned to EL students.
  • Act as an ombudsman to English Language (EL) students and parents.
  • Communicate with general education teachers, counselors, administrators and parents.
  • Develop prescriptive plans based on diagnostic testing.
  • Advocate and present issues and programs related to EL in formal and informal contexts.
  • Assist students with their general education classes.
  • Implement strategies and programs to improve EL students’ reading, writing and oral language proficiencies.
  • Administer and interpret the state required WIDA ACCESS annual testing of ELs, and the WAPT Screener for new ELs.

  • Understanding of pertinent learning intervention practices, such as Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS).

  • Knowledge of and practical experience in research based instructional practices.
  • Knowledge and practice with formative and summative assessments to evaluate and improve student achievement.
  • Ability to implement school district curriculum with consistency.
  • Work closely with school leaders to analyze student assessment data and use data to inform instruction.
  • Collaborate in grade level teams to discuss student work, share best practices, and ensure student mastery of standards.
  • Form and maintain relationships with students’ families. Participate in on-going professional development in the spirit of continuous improvement.
  • Understanding and lesson planning using the Michigan ESL Standards  from the WIDA Consortium and the Michigan ELA Standards

 

  • Familiarity with the State and Federal guidance and requirements for ELs

 

SUMMARY - TEACHER

  • Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences in the core academic subject area assigned to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society.
  • Coordinate the district program for ELL students. Collaborate with district staff and outside personnel to provide educational opportunities for ELL students.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.

 

  • Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities. Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
  • Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.
  • Implement procedures and coordinate the process to identify ELL students at all grade levels districtwide, including review of student data and testing of students.
  • Develop and revise ESL curriculum as needed.
  • Assist teachers to develop and provide ELL students with course work through curriculum modification, acceleration, etc.
  • Develop and conduct or arrange for staff development sessions, including sessions on various instruction methods, enriched learning in classroom settings, and methods for identifying ELL students.
  • Oversee the districtwide WIDA Testing.
  • Works with principals to create student and staff schedules to meet the needs of ELL Students in the District.
  • Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the ESL program and implement changes based on the findings.
  • Provide resources and materials to support staff in accomplishing program goals.
  • Consult with parents, administrators, counselors, teachers, community agencies, and other relevant individuals regarding ELL students.
  • Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and the local board policy.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  • Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Assist in selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
  • Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  • Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

ESL endorsement in the State of Michigan and at least 3 years of classroom teaching experience required.
