Job title: Special Education Teacher

SUMMARY: The Special Education Teacher is a highly qualified, state certified teacher responsible for delivering specific course content in an on-line environment. The teacher provides instruction, support, and guidance; implements and assists general education teachers with implementing IEP’s and 504Plans; manages the teaching and learning process, and focuses on students’ individual needs. Teachers will monitor student progress through PA’s learning and data management systems, and will work actively with students, mentors/coaches, and parents to advance each pupil’s learning. Essential Functions: The statements below are intended to describe the general nature and scope of work to be performed by this position. This is not a complete listing of all duties and responsibilities and/or skills required, and other duties may be assigned.

  • Provides targeted academic support and instruction to pupils as determined by the Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) or 504 Plan; including through phone conferencing, virtual interaction, web-conferencing and/or face-to- face; provides support to all supplemental programs being used by the special needs student to ensure participation and progress
  • Provides support to the parent on accommodations and/or interventions to promote attainment of IEP goals various communication methods; communicates with parents and providers to ensure that special education students are receiving the appropriate services and therapies
  • Collects data and reviews student performance to support documentation of IEP goals; Documents contact with parents, collaborates with general education teachers, guidance and administrative staff to ensure accommodations are being made as outlined
  • Makes modifications and/or accommodations to PA’s lessons and assessments as specified in the IEP, develops student IEPs, meets annual review timelines and notification requirements; Ensures that IEPs are focused on attainment of grade-appropriate academic standards and ensures compliance with special education mandates
  • Ensures that re-evaluations are completed within specific timelines as determined by state and federal mandates
  • Collaborates with general education teachers to ensure inclusion and success of special education students in the general education program; collaborates with other teachers and staff regarding “at risk” students to support the development and implementation of interventions that may be needed
  • Collaborates on progress, semester and grade reports
  • Maintains all required reporting as assigned by the Special Education Manager and/or other administration including pupil progress reports
  • Ensures that students participate in state testing and receive appropriate accommodations as defined by the IEP

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Attends required professional development sessions
  • Serves as proctor for state testing administrations
  • Supports the enrollment process for special education students

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree AND Three (3) years of experience in Special Education
  • Meets requirements for Highly Qualified (HQ) Special Education Teacher under applicable State and Federal law as well as highly qualified in the subject areas of instruction (e.g., math , ELA)

Certificates and Licenses: Appropriate state certification in special education and HQ status in area(s) of instruction

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Education or related field
  • Experience with online school environment
  • Experience working with proposed age groups
  • Experience supporting pupils in the use of technology
  • Ability to learn new tools and technologies
  • Experience teaching in both online and traditional school environments

Other Required Qualifications:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, search engines, and database systems including student records system
  • Flexible schedule, able to travel as needed
  • Must be highly accurate, detail-oriented, and have a strong command of the English language Strong interpersonal skills emphasizing professionalism, patience, and courtesy; ability to establish a professional, effective relationship with students
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, internet research, report writing techniques, able to learn and be proficient in online courseware systems associated with curriculum and obtain additional training in technology when required
  • Familiar with laws, rules, and procedures for special education services
  • Able to analyze data and determine what is needed to assist students on an individual and/or classroom basis
  • Able to adapt to meet different needs and learning styles, and create and/or support a learning environment favorable to learning and growth
  • Communicates effectively orally and in writing
  • Demonstrates good judgement in decision-making
  • Obtains additional licensing as needed
  • Ability to travel
  • Able to attend school functions
  • Ability to pass required fingerprinting and unprofessional conduct/background check


  • Master’s degree in Education or related field
  • Experience with charter and/or online school environment
  • Experience supporting students in the use of technology and thorough knowledge of technologies providing assistance
  • Ability to learn new technology and tools
  • Multiple endorsements preferred
  • Proficient in curriculum development, accommodations, and instruction for diverse student populations Experience teaching in online environments as well as traditional settings
  • Thorough knowledge of both IEP and 504 Plan procedures, policies, and implementation
  • Able to assist general education teachers to implement special education accommodations
  • Experience working with home schooling families
  • Experience coaching a club or other activity
