Job Description

Position Opportunity:

 

Under the direction of the Heartwood School Principal, the Behavior Specialist/Teacher is responsible for developing and providing instruction to students with the most significant behavior challenges and providing consultation to Ingham ISD’s center based programs and/or constituent school districts regarding the planning and implementation of behavior support services.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Master’s degree in special education or a field of study related to supporting students with significant behavior disorders, teaching certification with ASD or EI endorsements preferred.
  • Board Certified Behavior Analysis (BCBA) preferred or willingness to obtain.
  • Three to five years of experience implementing research-based strategies to address challenging behaviors.
  • Knowledge and experience in programming for students with special needs.  Center based experience preferred.
  •   Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  •   Ability to assess and accurately document student behavior and instructional progress
  •   Ability to make decisions and problem solve within a team.
  •   Ability to apply knowledge of current behavior research and theory to instructional programs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and to communicate clearly and concisely in written and oral communication with administrators, staff, parents/guardians and community agencies
  • Ability to deal effectively with pressure; maintains focus and intensity and remains optimistic and persistent, even under adversity.
  • Knowledgeable about educational organizations, educational law and the areas of educational assessment and evaluation.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Plans and provides instruction to students to meet their behavioral and academic needs.
  • Models instruction for staff to support behavioral techniques and implement positive behavior strategies.
  • Participates as a member of an Individualized Education Program Team meeting.
  • Provides parents and families with techniques to assess and implement positive behavior strategies in the home/community environments.
  • Coordinates and facilitates the creation of any guidelines and procedures necessary to support effective, research-based behavioral support practices across the county.
  • Serves as a liaison to community agencies regarding behavior support and related services.
  • Engages in regular professional learning opportunities to stay abreast of current evidence-based practices.
  • Provides consultation to Ingham ISD program administrators and instructional staff regarding evidence-based practices and procedures for positive behavior support.
  • Provides consultation and assistance to Ingham ISD program administrators and instructional and support staff on the planning and implementation of Functional Behavior Assessments, Positive Behavior Support Plans, Emergency Intervention Plans, classroom management systems and reinforcement systems.
  • Works in collaboration with ISD staff to support local districts in their ongoing development of early intervening services through multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) and positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) in the area of social emotional learning.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

 

Working Conditions:

Works in a school and/or office environment.  Requires daily travel. Work with students with challenging and aggressive behavior.
