Position Details: 

Job Function: The Grand Rapids Child Discovery Center uses the Reggio Emilia approach to support children in their academic and social development. Using a philosophy rooted in an “Education Based on Relationships,” teachers are expected to deeply know each child, build relationships with families, and create a positive classroom culture.

The right candidate for this position must be creative, flexible, and resourceful in using school space and resources, as well as motivated by working in teams within and across grade levels. Being excited about 4th and 5th graders and understanding their unique role and contributions in the life of an elementary school is a must.

District Description: The District has one building, approximately 265 students in grade levels K-5 and is located in the heart of Grand Rapids, MI. Our school enrollment is about 58% white students and 42% students of color. About 41% of our student population qualifies for Free or Reduced Lunch. About 7% of our total school population receive special education services. We are proud of the diversity in our school within a broad range of demographics. The Single Building School District is a Charter School, authorized by the Grand Rapids Public Schools. As such, teachers in the district are included in the GREA contract for purposes of salary steps and MESSA insurance.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and maintain a learning environment based on the principles of the Reggio Emilia approach that supports children and their learning.
  • Prepare and maintain documentation of progress via conferences, report cards, portfolios, and final documentation of project work.
  • Promote and work collaboratively on school goals and objectives.
  • Develop curriculum, units, lesson plans and assessments. Consistently analyze data and other evidence related to student learning and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Establish a classroom culture that is positive, shows value for all relationships (staff, families, students), and intentionally builds a culture that centers on academic learning, while supporting the whole child
  • Support non-academic needs through the Student Support Network District System to remove barriers that interfere with academic success
  • Differentiate instruction, including using relevant technology
  • Maintain all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, district policies, and school guidelines.
  • Participate in school and parent meetings as well as events and activities.
  • Work in close partnership with the classroom teachers, the Executive Director, the Pedagogista.

Additional Qualifications:

The GRCDC is seeking a teacher that is especially committed to leading systemic reconfiguration of the district, while helping to sustain the school’s sense of urgency in dramatically improving student and teacher performance in a short amount of time. Qualified candidates should skillfully demonstrate the following “status quo-busting” competencies:

  • the skill and willingness to leverage the student support network to ensure that students’ social, emotional, nutritional and health needs are addressed
  • the ability to collaboratively create and execute clear, logical instructional plans that produce strong results in student learning
  • the commitment to coordinate instruction within and across grade levels
  • the capacity to rigorously create and sustain a well-orchestrated system of ongoing data collection and analysis to inform a continuously responsive and adaptive system of tiered instruction attentive to students’ needs
  • the ability to help create and thrive in a professional environment thatis one of mutual respect, teamwork, and accountability
  • maintain his/her drive for results by demonstrating persistence, directness, and the ability to monitor and plan ahead

Professional Qualifications:

Required:Bachelors Degree or higher in Education. Valid Michigan elementary teaching certificate. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team setting. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written form.

Preferred:Previous classroom teaching experience in a district with comparable demographics. Demonstrated knowledge of the Reggio Emilia approach. Demonstrated knowledge of culturally responsive teaching practices. Crisis Prevention Intervention and CPR/First Aid Certification or willingness to obtain.
