AVAILABLE: Full-time, position available immediately.  Work schedule based on 260 contract days.  8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Monday - Friday.

SALARY & BENEFITS: Annual salary to be determined by qualifications and experience.  Full insurance benefits.

FLSA STATUS:  Exempt

Job Summary:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Develop, organize and administer all Special Education Programs directly operated by the Monroe County Intermediate School District, in compliance with local, state and federal rules and regulations.
  • Coordinate Special Education Programs operated by constituent school districts.
  • Develop and maintain continuous evaluation procedures for Special Education Programs.
  • Provide a liaison with the school staff and the community about programming for students with disabilities.
  • Provide leadership and assist in planning and administering the budget for Special Education.
  • Seek out, apply for and administer grants for Special Education programs. Keep informed of all legal requirements governing Special Education.
  • Oversee the training of ISD and LEA staff regarding matters related to Special Education.
  • Evaluate the need for new programs and services both at the Intermediate level and at the local level in cooperation with the local district administrators and staff.
  • Oversee the procedures for placement, transfer and termination of students in Special Education Programs and see to it that these functions are carried out within the framework of rules and regulations.
  • Cooperate with local school districts in providing Special Education services for all students with disabilities.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of existing programs.
  • Supervise and evaluate Special Education personnel.
  • Communicate to school personnel and the community at large issues surrounding special education programs.
  • Serve as an intermediary between the Office of Special Education and Monroe County.
  • Maintain membership in applicable state groups.
  • Regular, predictable attendance.
  • Adherence to work rules.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION: 

  • Minimum of Master’s degree required with emphasis on Special Education/Educational Leadership and eligibility for approval as a Special Education Director within the State of Michigan.  Specialist degree preferred.

CERTIFICATION: 

  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with Special Education endorsement or full approval in at least one area of Special Education.
  • Valid Michigan Administrative Central Office certification or enroll in a program within six months of hire leading to a Central Office Administrative certififcation.

 APPROVAL:

  • State of Michigan approval in at least one area of Special Education, required.
  • State of Michigan approval as a Supervisor of Special Education, or ability to obtain same. 

EXPERIENCE:  

  • Three years of administrative experience.
  • Five years special education teaching, preferred

SKILLS/OTHER:

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents and community.
  • Understanding of Special Education Rules and Regulations, and proven ability to apply them.
  • Proven ability to work with students, staff and community.
  • Demonstrated team management/leadership skills.
  • Ability to calculate figures and analyze budgets.
  • Ability to apply current Special Education research and theory.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in oral and written form.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.  The noise level in this position varies.  When visiting a building the noise level may be loud, in the office, quiet and at meetings, moderate.
