Position Details: 

This is to announce an Assistant High School Principal vacancy with duties to begin as soon as possible.
JOB TITLE:  High School Assistant Principal
JOB SUMMARY:  The High School Assistant Principal reports to the Principal and is responsible for providing assistance to the Principal in the administration of the total school program.

  • Assist with the articulation of the vision for 21st Century Teaching and Learning at North High School.
  • Assist in the supervision of the daily operation of the building.
  • Provide a variety of instructional leadership functions.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of the RTI model at North High School.
  • Administer a program of student discipline.
  • Assist with team leadership.
  • Schedule facilities and fields for after-school activities.
  • Supervise the school custodial and clerical staff and manage the lunch-and noon-hour program.
  • Assist with in-service programs.
  • Serve on various committees and organizations as assigned.
  • Assist with staff evaluation.
  • Assist the principal in supervision of instruction.
  • Assist the principal in curriculum development and improvement.


  • Facilitate the vertical articulation of curriculum and team functions.
  • Supervise the guidance staff in the development and implementation of the advisor/advisee programs.
  • Coordinate school-wide enrichment activities, assemblies, and pep rallies.
  • Chair building committees as assigned by the principal.

The candidate selected for this assignment will be the one who offers the best combination of qualities in accordance with the following standards and requirements:
1.   Master's degree preferred.  Training should include areas of school administration, supervision, and curriculum.
2.   The selected candidate shall demonstrate that their career path is leading towards eligibility to attain a principal position within the next 2-5 school years.
3.   A minimum of five years' teaching and/or administrative experience and substantial experience in a variety of leadership roles is preferred.
4.   Evidence of the candidate's ability to provide quality leadership must be demonstrated through:
o    excellent communication skills;
o    a conceptual understanding of human growth and development, learning theories and teaching methodologies;
o    skill and sensitivity in working with all members of the school community;
o    ability to plan, organize and execute the full range of administrative tasks associated with the operation of a comprehensive middle school;
o    skill in creating a positive, open, enthusiastic and well-organized teaching and learning environment;
o    skill in fostering the continued growth of staff members;
o    a commitment to community education concepts; and
o    a clear understanding of the high school philosophy.
5.   Candidates must possess a Michigan teaching certificate and be eligible for administrative certification in the State of Michigan.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand and walk over 60% of the work day in order to supervise students during change of classes and during lunch periods, walk between classrooms to observe instruction and rotate throughout the school complex on a regular basis.
  • Ability to sit up to 40% of the day in meetings, and to sit/stand several times in short periods of time while moving between classroom and sitting for short intervals of instructional observation.
  • Ability to walk up and down stairs throughout the day, and walk up/down bleachers or other stepped surfaces while supervising students or extracurricular events.
  • Must be able to work up to 12 hours in a day, which include the full school day and then during after school extra-curricular activities where administrative supervision and involvement is required.
  • Must be physically able to separate or intervene in physical altercations between students in order to guarantee student safety.

Working Conditions:

  • Starting date: 2018/2019 school year
  • Work year: 11 months
  • Compensation: in accordance with Grosse Pointe Administrators Association Master Agreement
