Position Details: 

The Early Childhood/Speech Therapist will serve will provide speech and language services for children birth to five years old within the AMA ESD counties.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Early Childhood/Speech Therapist shall have duties and responsibilities which include, but are not limited to the following.

  • Diagnosis of speech and language disorders in students 0-26 years of age, with the emphasis on birth-five.
  • Planning and implementing appropriate therapy and intervention strategies.
  • Providing consultation and professional inservice to teachers, parents and ancillary staff.
  • Serving on preschool, autism, hearing impaired and other diagnostic teams.
  • Serving on professional committees that involve the teacher of the speech and language impaired professional expertise.
  • Completing state and federal IEP/IFSP team requirements.
  • Serving as IEP team chairperson and coordinating student’s speech therapy and special education programming.
  • Serving as a liaison between the district, the state and national professional association (Michigan Speech and Hearing Association, American Speech and Hearing Association).
  • Provide evaluation and supports in compliance with Individualized Family Service Plans and Michigan Mandatory Special Education; special education evaluations specific to the discipline of the provider
  • Participate in the AMA Developmental Assessment Clinic.
  • Ability to provide extended school year speech and language services (ESY).
  • Other duties assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the Speech Therapist must be able to do the following:

  • Lift up to 50 pounds.


  • Must possess a Master’s Degree in speech and language pathology.
  • Must possess current Certification of Clinical Competence in speech-language pathology (CCC-SLP) from ASHA
  • A minimum of 60 semester or equivalent hours of academic credit in normal aspects of human communication, development thereof, and clinical techniques for evaluation and management of speech and language disorders.
  • A minimum of 300 clock hours of supervised practicum experience with person who present a variety of communication disorders to be acquired in conjunction with academic training, 150 hours of which shall be obtained at the graduate level.
  • Must possess knowledge of various methods of data collection and subsequent analysis and interpretation of data to drive appropriate instructional and behavioral interventions.
  • General understanding of early childhood handicapping conditions, developmental delays, and family dynamics.
  • Must be able to work in the summer, approximately 20-30 days.
  • Ability to advocate for families in the EarlyOn program.
  • Working knowledge of area agencies involved with providing services to children and families.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan Driver’s License.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively.
  • Must have own transportation to and from assignments throughout the district.
  • Must willing to travel.
  • Ability to pass criminal history check.
  • Valid Michigan driver’s license
