Position Details: 

Teacher of the Cognitively Impaired - Lapeer County Intermediate School District


  • Required: Bachelor’s Degree with a major in a specific Special Education area or have earned credit in course work equivalent to that required for a major (MARSE Rule 340.1782)


  • Required: Valid Michigan teacher’s certificate (MARSE Rule 340.1782)
  • Required: SA (Cognitive Impairment) Endorsement
  • Required: Highly Qualified under the No Child Left Behind Act

Work Experience

  • Preferred: 2+ years in a comparable capacity

Has knowledge of: 

  • State Assessment Systems, including MI-Access
  • Common Core Essential Elements (CCEE), Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS), and experience and knowledge of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)


Is able to:

  • Work with a team of professionals to design, implement, and monitor programs/plans for students with moderate to severe disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Prioritize and multi-task
  • Take initiative
  • Maintain student confidentiality at all times
  • Adhere to timelines and meet deadlines
  • Work independently, as well as part of a team
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports
  • Remain composed in stressful and difficult situations

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with a team of professionals, which may include a physical therapist, speech and language pathologist, and occupational therapist, to design, implement, and monitor programs/plans in the classroom setting
  • Design, implement, and monitor all program-related, student-learning activities
  • Design and implement a program for community-based learning
  • Establish a classroom structure that is appropriate for students with moderate to severe disabilities to facilitate a safe learning environment
  • Implement program curriculum utilizing high-quality instruction and best practices in classroom and community settings to help students develop skills, knowledge, and work habits
  • Establish instructional, behavioral, and transitional objectives for students through the IEP process; and assess, monitor progress, document, update, and revise these objectives as necessary
  • Maintain attendance records, lesson plans, progress reports, and daily anecdotal and behavioral logs on students
  • Coordinate and conduct METs and IEPTs for students 
  • Provide oversight and direction to Special Education Instructional Aides
  • Communicate and consult with parents/guardians, staff from community business partners, and staff from community service agencies as needed
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Wage: $40,511 – $81,729 annually
  • Benefits: Health, Dental, Vision, Long-Term Disability, and Life or $150 cash option in lieu of Health + other insurances; 10 Sick Days; and 2 Personal Business Days
  • Days and Hours: Monday – Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. with a 30-minute lunch and in accordance with the Special Education balanced calendar (6.75 hours/day for 187 days)
