Position Details: 

JOB TITLE:  Staff Accountant
Reports to:  Superintendent

This full time position requires a high level of organization and accounting skills, including proficiency in electronic spreadsheets and the ability to prioritize tasks. Requires a high degree of initiative and requires that the individual work independently with minimum supervision. Computer skills and the ability to work in a positive manner with a variety of people are essential. 

Position Summary:  The Staff Accountant is responsible for assisting with the fiscal functions of the school district in accordance with generally accepted accounting practices.  This includes financial reporting, internal and external auditing, cash management, budgeting, accounting, payroll and fringe benefits.  Also collaborates with Superintendent on matters relating to fiscal operations and financial strategies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assist in the development of budget for internal discussion and adoption. Communicate short term changes that may have an impact on long term forecasts
  2. Review budget and actual costs during the year, communicate significant short-term changes to the Superintendent and collaborate on the preparation of budget amendments during the school year
  3. Monitor all accounting activities in General Fund, Food Service Fund, Bond Construction Fund, and other Internal Funds. Prepare monthly account reconciliations
  4. Conduct activities to prepare for the District’s independent audit
  5. Act as an adviser to the Superintendent on questions relating to the business office and financial affairs of the District. Work to ensure that the business office operates in a manner consistent with District standards of service
  6. Shared responsibility for maintenance and enhancement of information systems for accounting, budgeting, payroll, inventory, and purchasing; identify areas needing improvement
  7. Provide staff with support, resources, information, and training as needed to carry out the priorities of the organization and department
  8. Monitor all state and federal grants, prepare grant reimbursement requests and final expenditure reports
  9. Responsible for all banking duties including bank statements, deposits, withdrawals, transfers, investments as related to cash flow
  10. Assist administrators and building office staff regarding business services and operations
  11. Responsible for some Human Resource functions such as hiring and benefits
  12. Responsible for calculating benefit amounts and informing all personnel of
  13. Responsible for annual reports including FID, SE-4094 and SE-4096
  14. Perform other duties or responsibilities as may be assigned

Employment Qualifications

The position requires knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired through the completion of an Associate’s Degree in Accounting.  A Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of one to three years of experience in school business preferred.


  • Strong computer skills. (EXCEL, Word, PDF)
  • Strong analytical and communication skills.
  • Broad knowledge of financial, accounting and technology applications.
