Special Education - ASD Consultant

The Special Education - Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Consultant will provide leadership and assistance to LEAs/PSAs in the development, implementation and evalu­ation of special education programs and services. The ASD Consultant will also work with the Wayne RESA team to build capacity within LEAs/PSAs to support students with ASD.  

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:     
                                      

  • Provide technical assistance and support to LEA/PSA person­nel in the implementation of fed­eral and state mandates and county procedures
  • Remain current with federal and state compliance requirements
  • Develop and implement professional development activities regarding academic, social and behavioral best practices for students with ASD
  • Provide consultation, coaching and technical support to LEAs/PSAs in matters pertaining to ASD
  • Build capacity for students with ASD throughout Wayne County by facilitating informational meetings and committees sharing the latest research with key personnel
  • Provide technical assistance to parents and other community members concerning school district and parent responsibilities in the special educa­tion process
  • Participate in long range planning for the delivery of special education programs and services
  • Serve as liaison to LEAs/PSAs and related service agencies in the provision of coordinated ser­vices to students with disabilities in both special and general education settings
  • Assist with the coordination and monitoring of funded projects and programs
  • Participate as an active team member in departmental and organiza­tional projects as assigned
  • Plan, use professional judgment, and act effectively to carry out the function of this position within the direction provided by Wayne RESA’s mission and goals
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Special Education and Early Intervention Services

QUALIFICATIONS:
 
Education
 

  • Master’s Degree required
  • Michigan Teaching Certificate with an endorsement in Autism Spectrum Disorder (SV) required
  • Approval as a Director or Supervisor of Special Education preferred

Experience
 

  • Minimum of three (3) years experience working with ASD programs required
  • Minimum of five (5) years supervisory experience at the local or intermediate district level preferred                                       
  • Demonstrated experience in interpreting and implementing special education rules and regu­lations required

SPECIAL SKILLS AND TRAINING
 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of current ASD research and best practices and other areas of special education and their impact on the special education community required
  • Demonstrated experience in developing collabora­tive, general, and special education programs required
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with WRESA staff, parents and district personnel required
  • Demonstrated consultation, training, group facilitation and process skills required
  • Demonstrated skill working with diverse populations required
  • Demonstrated listening, verbal and written communication skills required
  • Demonstrated organization and presentation skills required
  • Demonstrated collaboration, team building and problem solving skills required
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate emerging forms of technology into professional activities required

Compensation: 

Current WCSSF 12-Month Salary Schedule – Schedule H ($73,020 - $110,513 FY) and a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including health/dental/vision/life and long-term disability insurance. Generous time off including 19 paid holidays, sick and personal business days. Membership in the Michigan Public Schools Employee Retirement System www.michigan.gov/ors. The position is represented by the Wayne County Salaried Staff Federation Local 4479 (WCSSF).
