Hancock Public Schools
Position Details:

The Board of Education for Hancock Public Schools is seeking its next leader for our dynamic district. This is an excellent opportunity for an educational leader who enjoys the outdoors and is seeking an excellent quality of life.

Located in Houghton County, Michigan, Hancock is nestled on the north side of the Keweenaw Peninsula's Portage Waterway, directly opposite Houghton, Michigan. Given Hancock's location,  winters are met with magnificent lake effect snow. The city has the distinction of being the second snowiest city in the United States (and the snowiest city in the East) with snowfall averaging 211.7 inches per year. The community is close-knit and enjoys annual festivals, all winter sports and gorgeous Upper Michigan summers. Most recently, the community has supported our 2016 Boys State Championship Hockey team, our 2018 Girls Cross Country Championship team and the 2018 Girls (Houghton-Hancock co-op) Alpine State Championship team.

Education is a cornerstone of the community. Finlandia University (formerly Suomi College) and Gogebic Community College both partner with Hancock Public Schools, offering our high school students the ability to earn a college degree, or multiple degrees, at little or no cost. Michigan Technological University is in Houghton, but several parts of Michigan Tech are located in Hancock, including a former MTU "underground classroom" in the Quincy Mine.

Hancock Public Schools serves about 710 students in grades K-12. The Hancock Public School teaching staff is a blend of veteran teachers and those who are new to the classroom. The school district is comprised of three townships (Franklin, Quincy, Hancock) and the City of Hancock. Elementary-school students attend the Gordon Barkell Elementary School (formerly Hancock Elementary School). The district opened a new high school in 1999, and in 2010 the middle school moved to its own dedicated wing in that  building.
