PRINCIPAL FOR INSTRUCTION 

Purpose Statement:  The Principal for Instruction at Jackson High School shall serve under the direct supervision of the Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Curriculum and be ultimately responsible for all aspects of the school oper­ations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Applies policies of the Board of Education as they relate to instructional programs
  • Budgets maintenance; including overseeing the purchase of all instructional materials and resources
  • Oversees and authenticates the preparation of all district records for compliance with city, state, federal and/or annual reporting requirements as well as completion of building reports
  • Maintains the School Improvement Plan and related activities necessary to execute the Plan
  • Oversees and collaborates with school staff for the enrollment, registration, and orientation; including an EDP for each student of the program
  • Coordinates a testing team
  • Promotes Jackson High School through a variety of approved media
  • Determines the certification and fulfillment of graduation requirements by all Jackson High School students
  • Evaluates and disciplines professional and support staff personnel
  • Responsible for the professional development/training of all professional and support staff
  • Meets and works cooperatively with community agencies/organizations to identify additional educational, vocational, and training resources for students based on interests
  • Ensures accurate maintenance of pupil accounting records
  • Development and annual revision of Parent/Student and Faculty Handbooks
  • Collaborates with staff for the classification and promotion of all students.
  • Coordinates all school-related student services such as clubs
  • Responsible for the coordination of support services, including counseling
  • Acts as a referral agent and liaison person for all outside agencies providing support services to students
  • Receives and processes student discipline referrals
  • Interprets policies of the Board of Education as they relate to all student services
  • Attendance and participation in after-school/evening activities
  • All other duties as assigned

Qualification Requirements:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be qualified to perform essential duties. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Current Michigan Administrator Certificate, required
  • Secondary School Building Administrative experience, required
  • Demonstrated ability to work with the entire school community, required
  • Demonstrated knowledge of curriculum and instruction at the secondary level, required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, required
  • Labor Relations experience, required
  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate, preferred

  • The ability to run or move quickly to situations requiring immediate attention
  • The ability to use hands, leverage and strength to separate students who fight
  • The ability to sit and talk or listen
  • The ability to use a computer and related software with fingers and repetitive motions

Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervise High School Associate and Assistant Principals as well as school functions including athletic, academic, and extracurricular.
