Position Summary (See Job Description on Posting for Full Details):
Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Superintendent for Special Education and in accordance with established policies and procedures, the Specialist/Consultant performs a variety of tasks necessary to provide direct and consultative services for students who are visually impaired enrolled in regular or special education programs to facilitate the student's educational program needs.

Participates in the IEPT evaluation, service delivery, and recordkeeping processes.  Provides direct instruction and consultation to teachers who have students with visual impairments needing special education support in the home for early childhood and in classrooms for students in the schools.  Serves as a liaison between local educational agencies (LEAs), parents, other school support staff and other referral sources.  Participates in, or is responsible for, professional development workshops, planning educational interventions, curriculum development, developing adaptive teaching methods until the student completes required course of study.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS (If Applicable):
Required

  • Possession of Michigan Teacher Certification
  • Possession of Endorsement as a teacher of the visually impaired
  • Certification as an Orientation & Mobility Specialist

EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE:
Required

  • Possession of a master’s degree in Special Education with an emphasis in Orientation & Mobility
  • Three (3) or more years of experience working as a teacher.
  • Training to read and write Braille and Nemeth.

Desired

  • One (1) or more years of experience working as a VI consultant

  • Requires that the employee provide his or her own transportation for job- related travel.
