POSITION SUMMARY:

Plans, organizes, and delivers an instructional program, that has been developed and aligned to state standards.  Feedback is provided by the instructor in an online environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential.  This position requires daytime work Monday-Friday (8:00 am – 4:00 pm) with students from multiple Michigan schools.  The successful candidate will be required to deliver instruction in specific content areas (ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies, Electives, or World Language) using MVS course materials already created by our Instructional Design Team.  The teacher will be required to provide academic support to approximately 500 students per year enrolled in a variety of courses at varying levels of complexity.  This is a twelve-month instructional position.  Must successfully complete the Online Instructor Training (OIT) Course.  Full-time instructors will be assigned to work from home but will also be required to attend meetings at the Lansing office on a regular basis ranging from 1-5 days per month.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Plans, prepares, and delivers instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences for all Michigan Virtual School students in certified content area(s)
  2. Sounding board for student, mentor, and parent issues
  3. Provides professional/operational advice and feedback to instructors within their discipline, and across disciplines
  4. Creates instructional supplemental materials for students
  5. Maintains regular communications with other MVU staff, students, parents, and school personnel during daytime hours within 24 hours
  6. Implements instructional activities that contribute to a climate where students are actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences
  7. Collaborates face-to-face, with MVS staff weekly and/or as needed to facilitate communication, monitor and adjust curriculum and instruction based upon student needs and provide MVS appropriate feedback of student progress
  8. Observes and evaluates student performance and development
  9. Assigns and grades class work, homework, tests and assignments
  10. Provides appropriate feedback on student work within 72 hours, or 96 hours for courses in English Language Arts, Advanced Placement, and select social studies courses
  11. Encourages and monitors the progress of individual students
  12. Maintains accurate and complete records of students' progress and development including grading/responding to online discussions, contacting students via e-mail or instant messaging on a regular basis
  13. Posts weekly course announcements to students
  14. Updates all necessary records accurately and completely as required by law and school regulations
  15. Prepares required reports on student performance and activities at least two times per term
  16. Models professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, peers, and community
  17. Participates in MVS instructional meetings
  18. Maintains professional expertise with developments in subject area, teaching resources and methods and makes relevant changes to instructional plans and activities
  19. Participates in annual professional development
  20. Participates in making recommendations for revisions to courses and other assigned projects aimed at maintaining or improving the quality of course curricula
  21. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned. All work responsibilities are subject to performance goals and/or targets established as part of the annual performance planning process or as the result of organizational planning.

     

    REQUIRED EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS, & LICENSES (minimum requirements):

  22. Bachelor’s degree
  23. Possess and maintain a valid Secondary Teaching Michigan Certificate in specific content area (FB Certification and a second certification area) with designation of Highly Qualified status
  24. High-speed Internet connection at home office

     

    REQUIRED EXPERIENCE (minimum requirements):

  25. Minimum of three years of successful teaching at the middle or high school level

     

    DESIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  26. Master’s degree or higher preferred
  27. Successful experience teaching online and/or in a blended learning environment preferred
